At 11:30am the sun was shining and the wind was on our side. The first note was played atop the Huntington Lighthouse to kick off the 6th Annual Lighthouse Musicfest. It was a glorious moment and even better was the amazing spirit of the crowd and the fabulous bands that played. It was estimated that there were approximately 1,100 to 1,200 boats in attendance and was the poster child for “boating safety.”.
Boaters rafted up and anchored all around the lighthouse. They came on all types of watercraft and rocked to the music ranging from folk, rock, reggae and country. People danced on their boats for hours and celebrated with friends and music projected far out into the sound! Teens on zodiacs, dressed as pirates, held ships up for bounty exchanging commemorative tee shirts for $20 donations. The teens had a ball while earning community service credits!
The USCG, Huntington Maritime Services, Suffolk Marine Bureau, Huntington and Northport fire boats and the Lloyd Harbor Bay Constable were out to patrol and ensure safe boating practices. To further emphasize the need for orderly arrival and departure from the concert, the Town of Huntington enacted a 5mph speed zone for a one mile radius of the lighthouse from 11am until 10pm. It was a brilliant idea and a flawless day!
Don Davidson, our brilliant music producer, outdid himself this year. Not only was the selection of bands incredible, the sound system was above and beyond anything we could have imagined. Clear notes were heard a mile away! It was amazing and turned a new corner for this event in the future. He has truly overcome the hurdles that this location presents!
Join us for the Boat Parade Friday, November 23!

This was a special year for the lighthouse. Not only was it her 100th Birthday but the organization also received a matching $250,000.00 New York State Historic Preservation Grant. What does this mean? It means that the 27 year old group will be awarded this money as long as they raise matching funds or donated service of the same amount. The foundation of the lighthouse is in need of serious repairs along with necessary restacking of existing rip rap and an additional 650 tons of rip rap strategically placed to protect the structure for the next 100 years!
The preservation society had a very successful day and certainly kicked off the fundraising. “However, there is still a lot more money to raise to reach the goal and get the project started on time,” says Pamela Setchell, president of the Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society. To donate and help us reach our goal click on one of the “DONATE” buttons throughout the website!
Mark your calendars for the 2013 Lighthouse Musicfest on August 31, 2013!!!
